The sleep cycles

Sleep is still a mysterious function, but it is a crucial one for our health. Memory, metabolism, learning, or even immunity, there are many hypotheses that have yet to be confirmed, yet, it is well established that sleep is crucial for our well-being. Sleep seems to be a simple and automatic process, but did you know that sleep consists of 4 to 6 successive cycles, divided into 3 sleep stages?

Light sleep:

Light sleep is considered the first phase of sleep, it is characterized by a decrease in brain and muscle activity, the body is in a state of relaxation that deepens if sleep is not interrupted, so it is important that this phase takes place in the best possible conditions.

Slow-wave sleep (Deep sleep):

This is the phase when you are deeply asleep, your heart and breathing are synchronized in a regular rhythm, your body is still, waking up becomes difficult and the brain becomes more and more insensitive to external stimuli. The deep sleep represents almost 20-25% of the total sleep time and occurs more precisely at the beginning of the sleep period.

REM (Remedial) sleep:

Finally, REM sleep, whose duration increases progressively during the night, is considered the dream phase. This part of the cycle represents about 20% of the total nightly sleep.

REM sleep plays an important role in the development of the nervous system and the improvement of our memory capacities.
